The Steelers Signing Russell Wilson Being A Genuine Possibility Has Kyle Brandt Disgusted
Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Steelers haven't had the best quarterback play since the retirement of Ben Roethlisberger following the 2021 season. Kenny Pickett has struggled throughout the first two seasons of his NFL career, but a lot of that can be attributed to former Offensive Coordinator Matt Canada being one of the worst coordinators in the league. Regardless, the Steelers would be doing themselves a disservice if they didn't look outside the organization for quarterback help, and Russell Wilson just became available after the Denver Broncos officially informed him of his release.

Wilson has been connected to the Steelers ever since it became obvious the Broncos intended on moving on from him. Pittsburgh wants to give Pickett another shot, but they want to bring in strong competition for him in training camp. While Wilson is often ridiculed in the national media, he is actually still a pretty good NFL quarterback as showcased in 2023. Brining in Wilson wouldn't be competition for Pickett, it'd be a death sentence to his career as a starter in Pittsburgh. Good Morning Football's Kyle Brandt has strong feelings about the Steelers acquiring Wilson, and he doesn't like it one bit.

"H*ll no. I have very strong feelings about this. I don't think that's a fit personality wise. I think Pittsburgh has a very specific brand of coach and quarterback that they target. History, city, Russ has eccentricities, and that's fine, I think he is a beat of his own drummer. I can't possibly fathom the Pittsburgh Steelers and their fan base going to get Russell Wilson as their quarterback."

Wilson has had a very eccentric personality, especially in the recent years of his career. When he was with the Seattle Seahawks, it was reported that he had his own office, and that his teammates couldn't contact him directly. They had to go through his “team” of agents and manager to get into contact with their supposed captain and leader.

Wilson was in Seattle for the majority of his career, winning Super Bowl XLVIII against his future team, the Broncos. Wilson was traded to Denver ahead of the 2022 season and things got off to a rocky start. A lot of the blame fell on Wilson. He had a better year in 2023. Under a new head coach in Sean Payton, Wilson played better and things seemed to be going well before he was unexpectedly benched in the second half of the season, with the reason being because he would not change the injury guarantee he had in his contract.

Wilson had a clause in his contract that said he was to receive guaranteed money if he was injured. Denver wanted him to change this, Wilson refused, so they benched him so he couldn't get hurt despite, him throwing for 26 touchdowns to only eight interceptions with a passer rating of 98. Wilson was officially told he would be released when the new league year begins, which will make him a free agent. He is expected to be cheap, but even with the low price tag, Brandt and many Steelers fans do not want to see Wilson in the black and gold.

Steelers Have Plenty Of Options At Quarterback

Currently, Pickett is the only quarterback on the Steelers roster that is under contract for the 2024 season. If Pittsburgh wants to give him another chance and just bring in other quarterbacks to provide some competition for the starting spot, some options are Ryan Tannehill, Mason Rudolph, or another quarterback on that same level. These are quarterbacks that can start if they need to, but aren't immediate starters when they are brought onto a roster.

The Steelers are also reportedly in talks with the Chicago Bears about a possible deal for Justin Fields. If the Steelers acquire Fields or Wilson, they would start right away on the Steelers. The same goes for any of the other top-flight free agent quarterback like Kirk Cousins or Baker Mayfield.

Do you agree with Brandt? Or do you want to see Wilson in Pittsburgh?
