Dolphins GM suggests first-round pick with five-time Pro Bowler debating retirement

The Dolphins could go several different ways with their first-round pick (No. 21) in the 2024 NFL Draft.

However, after five-time Pro Bowl left tackle Terron Armstead debated retirement this offseason, general manager Chris Grier suggested Miami's plans may be clearer than previously thought.

"We're very respectful of his time and to his credit, he is an incredible communicator," Grier said via Hal Habib of The Palm Beach Post. "But you always look at every position when you kind of go through it and try and look and try and anticipate what some of the issues could be in the future."

Armstead has since decided to continue playing and worked out an adjusted contract that lowers his cap hit for the 2024 season, but there's no arguing the team must take a two-year look into the future.

While Grier is happy Armstead is returning following a season where he allowed just one sack, he also acknowledged the "possibility" that Armstead may not be with the Dolphins for much longer.

"I've gotten to know him over the last couple years — he is a fantastic person," Grier added. "So I'm very glad he is coming back, because he has impacted that room so much with those young guys."

If the 2024 season is the soon-to-be 33-year-old's last year in the league, adding his replacement in the draft would be a smart move by Miami.

Whether that would come in the first round or later is up for debate, but the Dolphins seem to be in a position where they could potentially land one of the better offensive tackles of the class.

Georgia's Amarius Mims and Oklahoma's Tyler Guyton are among the offensive tackles that could still be available when Miami is on the clock on April 25.

If the Dolphins opt to go a different direction on Day 1, however, there should still be several other future starters that are available on Day 2.

Getting Armstead back for at least one more season is huge for Miami, but it's no secret the team is hoping to land his potential replacement in about a week.
