Bears Show Competence, Send Message To Caleb Williams

We know that USC quarterback Caleb Williams has been the projected first pick in the 2024 NFL Draft for quite some time now. The Chicago Bears own that pick and after trading Justin Fields, it's nearly written in stone who they'll choose. General Manager Ryan Poles is navigating the roads leading to the draft with expertise, and while other NFL franchises are working to better their organizations, some are treading dangerous waters... again.

On Friday, the crew from the Pat McAfee Show discussed the Washington Commanders and their possible future quarterback, Jayden Daniels. With such high-class athletes who have incredible expectations, the Commanders may have made a huge mistake that the Bears very clearly avoided this year.

The Bears Are Treating Caleb Williams Right

As the world of football changes each year, NFL franchises must adapt. The athletes coming out of college football are incredibly in-demand and have more control over their destiny than ever before.

Given the circumstances, the Chicago Bears are excellently handling the quarterback situation. Poles and company only brought in one quarterback for a top-30 visit and that was Caleb Williams' only trip. It's clear who the Bears want at the quarterback position and that's flattering to Williams.

But not every NFL franchise is taking this approach. NFL Insider, Adam Schefter, was on ESPN's 'Get Up' talking about Washington and what they'll do with the second pick. Schefter said:

Washington brought in several quarterbacks to meet with including Daniels, J.J. McCarthy, Drake Maye, and Michael Penix Jr. From Schefter's perspective, Daniels and his representation are upset the Commanders are even considering selecting another quarterback with the second pick on April 25.

But the Pat McAfee crew brought up a fair point. Although it's widely accepted the Chicago Bears are taking Caleb Williams, there's still a possibility they skip over the USC star and select Jayden Daniels instead. It's unlikely but Washington still needs to do their due diligence on the other quarterback prospects for this situation.

It's a long shot and the Commanders would undoubtedly take Williams if the Bears took Daniels. But Schefter adds that Chicago did something unique and sent a message to Williams.

The Commanders have to prepare for every possible outcome and the Bears don't. Chicago has more control here than any other NFL franchise and Ryan Poles is treating the situation with incredible respect.

When the Bears only meet with one player, Caleb Williams, it sends the message that they're serious about him as the future of the franchise. It gives Williams more confidence, structure, and expectations.

Like several other NFL teams who've adopted modernity and appreciated what's laid out in front of them, the Chicago Bears are approaching that level. When they select Williams on Thursday night, the Bears will finally emerge into the NFL spotlight as a legitimate football team and will be crowned "the team to look out for" in the very-near future.
